İzmir police detain 50 suspects in massive anti-gang raid

26 September 2009 / ÖZDEMIR ÖZKAN, İZMIR
The İzmir Police Department launched a massive operation against a criminal gang in the city early on Friday, detaining around 50 of its suspected members.

Nearly 600 police officers, including special security forces, participated in the operation. The gang was allegedly engaged in fraud in 33 cities and 65 districts throughout Turkey. Police confiscated large amounts of ammunition and many weapons during the operation.

The operation was conducted simultaneously in various locations in İzmir early in the morning. Police were assisted by helicopters which hovered over the city to coordinate the raids. İzmir Police Chief Ercüment Yılmaz said his department would continue its fight against gangs and illegal groups in the city.

“We have so far detained dozens of people in the operation, which started early in the morning. The operation is going on to reveal other members of the gang, which is accused of fraud. There are four or five other gang members to be captured. We will give a detailed explanation about the operation later,” Yılmaz stated.
