A driver working for Garipoğlu's father, Nida Garipoğlu, and the driver's wife are among those who have been taken into custody. One of the six was detained in the city of Adana, while the rest were arrested in İstanbul, the police said. The person detained in Adana was identified as Mehmet Karakayalı (47), head of the purchasing department of the Garipoğlu group of companies.
The individuals stand accused of aiding and abetting. The prime suspect in the murder, Cem Garipoğlu, evaded police for 197 days before surrendering to authorities of his own accord last week. Reports have also confirmed that the detainees were questioned about how Garipoğlu was able to hide in a ranch house in Çorlu for so long and who might have helped him.
The individuals taken into custody yesterday were taken to the İstanbul Police Department's Public Safety Directorate's Homicide Unit for interrogation.
Meanwhile, the Yeni Şafak daily yesterday published photos of the house where Garipoğlu allegedly stayed before his surrender. The house, located in the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ, is hardly visible through the fence and poplars surrounding it. There are no other houses or buildings around the one-story house, which is located across from a pond. A dog house can also be seen in the yard through the trees. Local villagers have told reporters that they had suspicions about the house, but they dared not go to the police, saying the house had previously been used to hide individuals that appeared to be “mafia related.”
Reports also said the floods that wreaked havoc in the Tekirdağ-İstanbul area, causing the death of more than 40, led Garipoğlu to move to another house near İstanbul because a pond across from the home had overflowed.
The allegations against Garipoğlu include claims that a retired army officer, identified only by his first name, Ahmet, who works as a senior executive in the Garipoğlu group of companies, masterminded the escape plan. He is believed to be the person who brought Garipoğlu to the Çorlu house.
Journalist Cemil Baran, who had been detained for acting as an intermediary between the victim's and the suspect's fathers, had also made the same allegations. Baran had stated that an ex-officer named Ahmet, who was part of a security team that conducted an operation in 1997, when terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan was captured and brought to Turkey, would be detained after Garipoğlu's surrender.
