The bayram landscape from a political perspective

24 September 2009 / ZAMAN MUSTAFA ÜNAL,
This year Ankara gave off a more colorful bayram feel than in previous years. And the second-day-of-bayram greetings between political parties which we have become accustomed to this year featured some interesting dialogue.
While the sharp tongue of politics softened a bit during these bayram greetings, the truth is, any sort of positive atmosphere was not really reflected in the words spoken by political party leaders. The delegation from the Republican People's Party (CHP) arrived at the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) headquarters with flowers and chocolate. Reciprocating in kind, AK Party member Şükrü Ayalan said, “From now on, we will be both eating and speaking sweetly.” Too bad that these sweet sorts of words really couldn't become the regular pattern of politics in Turkey. Is it possible? Not really.
