Learning how to not be made uncomfortable

19 September 2009 / BUGÜN GÜLAY GÖKTÜRK,
Seeing as how Melih Gökçek has canceled his alcohol poll for Ankara's Bahçelievler district, we can assume that this subject is now a closed matter. But before fully closing it, it might be helpful to think a bit more about this whole matter of certain people being made uncomfortable by the topic of alcohol.
To wit, the most common reason cited by readers who did not like my column regarding the 7th Boulevard alcohol referendum was my use of the expression “don't be made uncomfortable.” These are people who experience discomfort when alcohol is consumed near them. And thus they see banning or at least limiting this action as being completely reasonable. But in fact, a mature society is one in which individuals have learned to be comfortable even when faced with those who are different and act differently from them.
