A 4-year-old child died on Wednesday from phosphorus poisoning after he swallowed a firecracker, commonly sold in grocery stores especially during festivities and often bought by children.
A flower seller in the Meram district of Konya, the child's father, Nevzat Yılmaz, brought his son, Yusuf, with him to work. Asking for money from his father to buy something from the grocery store, Yusuf bought firecrackers. When he returned after playing with his friends in the neighborhood, Yusuf began vomiting. The two returned home, but Yusuf continued to vomit. His parents then took him to a nearby hospital. When he told his mother that his friends had made him swallow a firecracker, Yusuf was taken from the first hospital to the Meram Faculty of Medicine Hospital at Selçuk University.
Expressing the family's grief over losing their son, Nevzat Yılmaz warned other parents about the dangers of such products, adding: “We are on the eve of Eid al-Fitr. My child died; I hope others will not. I want to ask municipalities why they allow the sale of ‘prohibited' firecrackers. Besides, the firecracker packaging states that they cannot be sold to minors.” The police investigation into the incident continues.
