The police have detained six individuals suspected of membership in the al-Qaeda terrorist organization as part of an ongoing investigation into bombings in İstanbul in 2003 that killed over 50 people and injured as many as 700.
The six people detained on Sept. 13 were referred to a court yesterday after being processed and interrogated at the İstanbul Police Department's Anti-terrorism Unit. Officials say they have reason to believe the six men are connected to the 2003 bombings at the HSBC Bank headquarters in İstanbul and a nearby synagogue.
Officials said the detentions came as the culmination of a lengthy investigation into the 2003 attacks. The men were taken into custody in raids that took place in a number of districts in İstanbul. Documents were also seized in the operations.
