What kinds of diseases are caused by insufficient exposure to daylight?
Never ending backaches, irregular sleep, continuous fatigue and anxiety, headaches, lethargy and most importantly, a constant sense of exhaustion and tiredness... It is doubtful that a person who feels tired or sleepless even at the start of the day can be effective or efficient.
Mankind is quick to adopt and use the facilities and comfort provided by technology, but after some point, some unwanted negative side effects may emerge. “Lack-of-daylight diseases” is an issue that has recently being discussed with increasing prominence. This disorder is seen in people who work in closed spaces without sufficient exposure to daylight, and if it isn't treated in time, it may become chronic.
Why aren't we able to sufficiently benefit from daylight?
We need to be exposed to daylight for at least for an hour a day, but most of us do not pay attention to this. Even if the buildings in which we work have large windows, our bodies are deprived of ultraviolet light since it cannot pass through window panes. Thus, symptoms occur over time. Moreover, we tend to wear sunglasses or use excessive creams to ward off sunlight, which further decreases the amount of daylight that our bodies are exposed to.
How are our bodies affected from lack of sunlight?
Depending on how insufficient our exposure to daylight is, first, our sleeping mechanism is distorted. Then, other complaints follow, which are connected to the disruption of the immune system. Our reserves of vitamin D decrease. Vitamin D is as important for the skeletal system as it is for maintaining one's balance. If the body does not have access to sufficient amounts of vitamin D, this both increases bone fragility and may cause falls due to one's inability to maintain balance. Our skeletal system is considerably harmed.
Excessive exposure to daylight may cause cancer
We need to ensure that our bodies are sufficiently exposed to daylight. But there is one thing that we must not forget while we are sunbathing because excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays may cause harm to our cells, and skin cancer may develop. Indeed, skin cancer is common among people who like tanning. This risk is particularly higher for those who have lighter skin and who begin going to a tanning salon at a young age. Elderly people or those who have cardiovascular or respiratory disorders should not spend too much time in sunlight or sleep in sunlight around noontime. On the other hand, we need to go outside and be exposed to daylight every day in order to get rid of many complaints that disrupt our lives. This is a requirement especially for those who spend all their time in closed spaces and who see daylight behind windows.
