Expats distribute aid packages in Antalya

12 September 2009 / ÖZKAN MAYDA, ANTALYA
A group of expatriates residing in the southern province of Antalya paid visits to homes of the poor and needy in the city on Thursday and distributed them aid packages.

The needy families were determined by the Intercultural Dialogue Center in Antalya (AKDİM). Larisa Çeyik, one of the charitable expats in the city, said she was highly emotional when he visited the impoverished districts of Antalya. “I have one wish from God, which is being able to see that charitable givers continue helping those in need. I felt a deep pain in my heart when I visited the impoverished districts. The poor were delighted when they saw people who came to help them,” noted Çeyik, originally a Russian. Çeyik underlined that charitable acts should not be limited to the holy month of Ramadan. “We should help those in need every day. It is a source of happiness to heal the wounds of the needy. AKDİM is very sensitive in extending a helping hand to the poor. We are very happy to be a part of such charitable acts,” she added.

Another charitable giver of German origin, Margot Schombel, stressed that she likes Turks more as she knows them better. “I used to think that all areas of Antalya were filled with luxurious hotels. I didn't think that there were so many poor people here. It is a great feeling to be able to help the poor,” she remarked. According to AKDİM Secretary General İbrahim Gundak, poor people are surprised to see charitable foreigners at their doors with aid packages.
