Cargo ship breaks in two near İstanbul

9 September 2009 / ALI CANSEV, İSTANBUL
A Cambodian-flagged cargo ship, the Kramco, split in two off the coast of the Black Sea village of Kilyos on Monday evening amid a storm and partially sank as its 12 crew members were rescued by coast guard teams.

Eight Azeris, two Georgians and two Turks were aboard the ship, which sent out a distress signal at around 5 p.m. as strong winds and waves split the ship in two, sending the stern toward the coast. The front part of the ship reportedly sank. The 12 crew members, who were luckily on the stern, were rescued by coast guard teams. They were later referred to the Coast Guard Command.

"The ship's stern was dragged to the coast after the accident. Twelve crew members were rescued by coast guard teams. The front part of the ship stayed off the coast. No one died in the accident," Mete Fatsa, a witness, said, describing the incident.
