Security officials say PKK plans terrorist acts against democratic initiative

9 September 2009 / SEDAT GÜNEÇ, ANKARA
Turkish security officials have stated that the urban arm of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) is planning to carry out various acts of terrorism until their jailed leader's proposal on a structural solution to the long-standing Kurdish question is revealed.

According to sources from the Security General Directorate, the Kurdish Communities Union, Turkey Council (KCK/TM), an organization that allegedly functions as the urban arm of the PKK, is planning terrorist acts until the plans of their leader Abdullah Öcalan are revealed. The terrorist organization is aiming to have members of the security forces and the public up against each other, sources said.

Öcalan told his lawyers on Aug. 26 that he had given his proposals to officials on Aug. 20 at İmralı Prison where he has been held in isolation since his capture in 1999. He was expected to announce his proposals for the settlement of the Kurdish problem on Aug. 15, but delayed it to a later date, saying he had not finished writing it. However, he made a partial announcement of his proposals through his lawyers in August. After the security officials found out that the KCK/TM was planning terrorist acts, it warned the governors of 81 provinces, saying, “There are illegal and violent demonstrations planned in towns and provinces in addition to resistance activities against the police. There could also be looting.”

The Security General Directorate sent a warning to all units to be prepared against such action and to increase security checks in public places, public housing complexes and public sector buildings. Special attention will also be paid to suspect packages and vehicles.
