Ömer Gül was not suspicious of the conmen since they told him that his mobile phone was copied and was being used for illegal purposes. The conmen then stated that both prosecutors and security personnel were in the process of conducting an investigation to capture the suspects but that they needed the transfer of minutes to complete the investigation. He told the Antalya Police Department on Aug. 19 that he sent 1,750 prepaid minutes on several occasions to the mobile phones of the men who posed as officials from the Antalya Police Department and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Gül believed the men because their voices were accompanied by sounds coming from the police wireless.
Following the endless requests by the men for more prepaid minutes, Gül shared his concerns with the shopkeeper who sold him the minutes, and the shop keeper told him that he was probably conned.
After Gül's formal complaint, the Antalya Police Department started a probe into the event. The Security General Directorate is also investigating the matter. Security forces have not yet been able to find the suspects, but they discovered that numerous citizens had been the victims of a similar scheme. The conmen are believed to have exchanged prepaid minutes for cash.
