Acting Moldovan president resigns

3 September 2009 / REUTERS, AP, MOSCOW
Moldova's acting President Vladimir Voronin is resigning to take on a role in parliament, Russia's state-run RIA news agency reported on Wednesday, citing an unidentified source. Voronin, who leads the country's Communist Party, has ruled Moldova since 2001.
"Vladimir Voronin is leaving in order to work in parliament," RIA quoted the source in the Communist Party as saying. The report could not be immediately confirmed. Itar-Tass news agency quoted a party source as saying that Voronin intended to resign while Interfax news agency said Voronin had told a party meeting he was ready to go. The Interfax source said an official announcement would be made next week at a meeting of parliament. Western-leaning parties won a combined majority in Moldova's parliament in a snap election in July and have formed a coalition in an attempt to wrest power from the Communists.
