Construction to reinforce the Old Haliç Bridge, which connects the two sides of the Golden Horn, against a potential earthquake in İstanbul was launched on Sunday by the General Highways Directorate (KGM).
The construction began at the north exit of the bridge and is expected to last for two months. The bridge will be under construction between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. nightly, when the traffic flow is relatively less heavy. During the work vehicle traffic will be restricted to three lanes.Previous construction projects on the two bridges spanning the Bosporus caused massive traffic problems on the roads leading to the bridges. The Bosporus bridges, Fatih Sultan Mehmet and Bosporus, were strengthened in June and October of 2008, respectively.
