Firefighting vehicle illegally towed in Ankara

26 August 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
An administrative foul-up at the Ankara 2nd Bailiff Directorate resulted in the towing and impounding of a fire truck this week, much to the fire department's disdain.
According to reports, a fire truck on its way to put out a blaze was involved in an incident that resulted in property damage. Following this, its license plate was recorded and the vehicle was towed to the Balgat Vehicle Lot until a fine for the incident was paid.

An Ankara Metropolitan Municipality authority told the Anatolia news agency  that an “erroneously” unpaid vehicle fine had led to some firefighting vehicles being towed away, but that the impounding was reversed in May when an agreement had been made to have such fines paid on an installment schedule.

Despite the fact that the Ankara 2nd Bailiff Directorate issued a memorandum a few months ago announcing that firefighting vehicle should not be towed, the directorate failed to send the memo to the police department. The directorate said it tries to release the vehicle. Firefighting authorities have expressed their intention to file a criminal complaint with the bailiff directorate for not sending the memo to the police and for towing a public service vehicle, which is illegal, to begin with.
