Emergency line operators to speak Kurdish in Batman

26 August 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
The dial-155 phone line, connecting  people to emergency operators, is now manned in Batman by civil servants who speak Kurdish.
The announcement of the new system came at an iftar dinner with journalists attended by the province's Governor Ahmet Turhan, Police Chief Hasan Ali Bilim and Deputy Governors Yasemin Çetinkaya, Osman Varol and Mustafa Cihad Feslihan at the TPAO Kristal Park.

Answering reporters' questions, Governor Turhan said that within the police department there were 238 civil servants who speak Kurdish, 60 of whom are police officers, and that they would be scheduled so that there will always be Kurdish speakers on duty to provide services. Turhan said: “Those who dial 155 for help and speak Kurdish will find a Kurdish-speaking civil servant on the other end of the line.” The governor noted that he had even assigned a Kurdish-speaking personal assistant for himself so that he could address citizen concerns in real time.

Turhan also commented on the work of the Social Aid and Support Foundation when speaking to the press, saying that TL 700,000 in funding had been earmarked for the month of Ramadan. He explained that without embarrassing needy families or commercializing their charity work, they had evaluated requests for aid coming from citizens and distributed money, food and other forms of aid at people's homes accordingly.
