The conversation took place on Thursday at the initiative of Clinton, news portal PanArmenian reported, citing officials at the Armenian presidency. The two discussed issues concerning Armenian-American relations and regional problems, particularly the Turkish-Armenian political dialogue, it said.
The US has backed closed-door talks between Turkey and Armenia aimed at restoring their diplomatic relations, severed by Turkey in 1993 in show of solidarity with Azerbaijan after Armenia occupied a chunk of Azerbaijani territory in a war over Nagorno-Karabakh.
Diplomats from the two countries have held a series of talks on reopening their shared border and restoring diplomatic relations, but the process stalled recently after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan assured Azerbaijan that the border would not be opened unless Armenia withdrew from Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenia dismisses any link between the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute and Turkish-Armenian reconciliation efforts.
