Teenager violently murdered in juvenile hall

19 August 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A 16-year-old being held in a juvenile detention center in Adana was hanged after being violently beaten in his ward on Sunday night.
The death of Yasin Akyüz, arrested on charges of drug dealing, was caused by asphyxia associated with hemothorax, according to the autopsy report. The report also listed a series of fractures to his ribs caused by severe blows which punctured his lungs. The report says Akyüz may have been strangled or choked by someone with a pillow before he was hanged.

The incident occurred at the M-type Prison for Children in Pozantı, Adana. Akyüz's dead body was found in the ward on Monday morning.

Later that day, Akyüz's body was brought to Mersin, where his family resides. A funeral service was held in Mersin's Güneş neighborhood. The body was later moved to the family's home village of Çavpınar in Mardin's Midyat district, where Akyüz was buried.

The primary suspects are the 13 ward mates of the young man. The youngest in the ward, a 12-year-old, has claimed responsibility for the murder. His brother, Mehmet Arif Akyüz, 28, told reporters: “According to the autopsy report, all his ribs were broken. They hanged him with a rope after beating him. Later, a 12-year-old claimed responsibility. We do not believe this.” He said he will apply to all the relevant agencies for those responsible to be punished.

Hasine Akyüz, the grieving mother, said her son, who had been in the detention center for two-and-a-half months, had been framed for something he didn't do. The Pozantı Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation and have interrogated the children and administrators at the center.
