İstanbul’s best sandwich and wrap spots

17 August 2009 / SEVİM ŞENTÜRK , İSTANBUL
OK, fast food is bad for you; this is a proven fact. However, there are some tastes that one just cannot do without.
And then who can actually argue that köfte served on bread, aromatic fish sandwiches and döner made from delicious lamb meat are actually fast food? So we thought of satisfying our cravings in the scorching heat of August as we pounded the pavement on İstanbul's streets.

We were wondering which places were the best areas to eat at so we decided to stop by restaurants that serve up a mean sandwich or wrap. We tasted everything from bread to “döner that tastes as sweet as Turkish delight,” as the shop owner said, describing kokoreç, which has been the subject of songs. It turns out that celebrities frequent many of these places. You may be thinking, “Why should we step out just to have sandwiches or wraps during these days when it is scorching hot outside?” Instead of marinating at home, just wander outside, even if you have to force yourself, and see what is out there. In the food department, you may find that you will discover items that are easy on your taste buds and your wallet, such as fish and bread along the Bosporus.

It is practically sinful to leave İstanbul without having fish and bread on the water. The fish stands that are set up along the Eminönü shore give you the opportunity to fill up your stomachs while enjoying a breathtaking view. If you are in Eminönü, you will be able to smell the fish from 200 meters away, and you will hear your stomach rumble after smelling this wonderful aroma. Fish served on little boats are one of İstanbul's cheapest luxuries. You can enjoy your bread and fish while viewing the beautiful water. We recommend that you enjoy your sandwich during sunset as the warm breeze caresses your face. The average price of fish and bread is TL 4.

Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ’s ‘Leyla’

Who doesn't love chocolate? If there were a menu of chocolate choices, what would be your pick? Barış Büfe, located on Nispetiye Street, serves chocolate a special way. Barış Büfe, which is frequented by soccer player Gökhan Zan, actor Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ and artist Murat Göğebakan, offers an item it calls Leyla. This kiosk, most famous for its grilled cheese sandwiches, is also famous for Leyla -- a grilled sandwich with milk chocolate and banana. You should definitely stop by the kiosk, which is open 24 hours a day. It is so great that once you taste Leyla, you will want to swing by Nispetiye all the time. Barış Büfe has a lot more to offer, and you really do not pay all that much. For example, Leyla is TL 6.50. (0212 287 42 80).

Bergüzar Korel and Tülin Şahin’s favorite breakfast place

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So, naturally, it is important that you find a place that prepares breakfast with fresh ingredients. Çerkezo, located across from the Teşvikiye Mosque, is just that kind of place. The display window and decor will welcome you into this restaurant, where you have the chance to eat breakfast, including German and Italian breads. Diet bread balls made with olives are a specialty here. Famous names such as actress Bergüzar Korel and model Tülin Şahin love Çerkezo, which has been serving breakfast lovers since 1991. The restaurant's owner, Fikret Yorulmaz, has decorated the place with drawings of seafood.  (0212 260 85 87)

Time to get spicy with ‘kokoreç’

Kokoreç is cumin, thyme and red pepper flakes on top of piping hot intestines and sandwiched between some bread. So where are some good places to eat it? Of course, one of the most popular kokoreç places is Şampiyon Kokoreç, which has been serving the Beyoğlu Fish Market since 1962. Many people are addicted to kokoreç. For them, morning or evening makes no difference. They can eat kokoreç any time of day. If you are not one of these people and are just looking to try out this acquired taste, then Şampiyon Kokoreç is the place for you. Even though this chain restaurant has many locations, the one located at the Beyoğlu Fish Market is the best. Prices range between TL 6 and 10. (0212 251 25 11)

Bambi: a hotspot for celebrities

Taksim is a must-stop spot for those visiting İstanbul. If it is noon, it is the perfect time to stop by Bambi located on Sıraselviler Street adjacent to İstiklal Street. Atom, a beverage made from mixed tropical fruits, is quite popular as well as Bambi's grilled mozzarella cheese sandwiches. Bambi, which first opened on Sıraselviler in Taksim in 1974, now has locations open 24 hours in places such as Şaşkınbakkal, Sirkeci, Kadıköy, Çamlıca and Mecidiyeköy. Many celebrities visit Bambi, including Cem Yılmaz and Kenan Doğulu. The mozzarella wrap is TL 6, while the atom is TL 4.5. (0212 293 21 21).

Turkish-style döner at Sadık Usta

We accidentally bumped into Sadık Usta's five-square-meter restaurant on the backstreets of Aksaray. We were surprised by the crowd waiting to be served. The former owner of the place, Sadık Usta, started this restaurant in 1982 in order to best share the delicious flavor he believed meat should offer everyone. He started this stand as a family business, which quickly turned into a place where people would hang out and neighbors would catch up with one another. When Sadık Usta died two years ago, his nephew Baki Kaya decided to carry the torch. The döner is prepared with special meat that comes from Erzincan. While a quarter bread serving is TL 2.5, a half bread serving is TL 3.5. (0555 523 00 00).
