10 vital symptoms you should monitor for your health

16 August 2009 / VASFİYE ÖZCANBAZ , İSTANBUL
Even though we see a doctor at times when we have chest or stomach pain or a fever, we rarely pay attention to symptoms that could be indications of more serious illnesses.
A Mayo Clinic report says there are 10 leading symptoms that should be taken into account for better health; these symptoms usually require a visit to a specialist doctor.

Unexplained weight loss: Losing weight may look good to you; however, if you lose weight unintentionally, this may be a sign of a medical problem. If you lose 10 percent of your total weight over a six-month period, you should see a doctor. This kind of weight loss may be caused by an overactive thyroid, depression, liver disease, cancer or malabsorption disorders.

Constant fever: Fever is not a disease, but it is often a symptom of a major illness. Most of the time, it means that the body is fighting against a virus or an infection. However, if you have a 38.9 degrees Celsius fever over three consecutive days, you should see a doctor. Similarly, if your fever is over 40 degrees Celsius, and you feel sick, you should go to the nearest hospital. Constant fever may be a sign of a number of diseases including urinary tract infections and tuberculosis.

Shortness of breath: If you feel short of breath and have not been overexerting yourself, this could be a symptom of a medical condition, and you should see a doctor immediately. The causes for shortness of breath include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia or other heart and lung diseases. If a panic attack accompanies shortness of breath, the problem might be psychological.

Unexplained changes in bowel movements: Although people's bowel movements vary, diarrhea that lasts over a week or any other extraordinary problems should be a concern for your health; in such cases, you should go to a doctor as these could be symptoms of a bacterial or viral infection.

Delirium: Delirium is a sudden state of severe confusion. If you have one of the following symptoms, you should see a doctor as soon as possible: sudden disorientation, sudden changes in mood including aggressiveness, sudden concentration problems or sudden mental problems. These could be signs of infection, anemia, low blood sugar or psychiatric disorders.

Sudden, strong headaches: Headaches are widespread and are rarely considered a cause for concern, but a sudden violent headache may be a sign of a serious problem. If you also have a fever, skin rash, confusion or a seizure along with the headache, and this happens for the first time after the age of 55, you are advised to see a doctor.

Sudden weakness, loss of speech or vision: If you have these symptoms, even minutes will matter. These are symptoms of paralysis or transient ischemic attack. You need to see a doctor in case of the following symptoms: sudden loss of strength, numbness, loss of speech or vision, dizziness, sudden falls or sudden strong headaches.

Flashes of light: Flashes of light may be a sign of a retinal detachment. To prevent a permanent loss of sight, you should seek immediate hospital treatment.

Feeling full even after a light meal: In cases that last over a week, you should see a doctor. If the feeling is accompanied by sickness, vomiting, fever or loss of weight, these symptoms should also be mentioned to the doctor. The reasons for these symptoms could be stomach or intestinal illnesses or potentially more serious problems.

Hot, red and swollen joints: If one of your joints is swollen or warm, this may be a sign of infection, which requires immediate treatment. Other reasons include some types of arthritis and gout, a medical condition in which the body doesn't flush out uric acid from the bloodstream.
