The group was lead by surgeon Can Terzier, who is head of the Mersin Hekimeli Derneği (Mersin Healing Hand Association). Terzier noted that in two months, the team of 15 doctors, who were sent with the support of the Turkish Health Ministry, performed over 300 free operations of various kinds in Darfur. Terzier and his team, who worked at the Turkish Red Crescent Sahra Hospital there, also performed circumcisions for 470 children.Terzier said he and his team enjoyed making a difference in people's lives and would return to Sudan for another trip as soon as it could be organized. “We experienced incredible happiness at being able to help people who live in difficult conditions. I'm planning to go back the first chance we get, hopefully with a project for a campaign to perform 10,000 circumcisions,” Terzier said.
Many residents of Darfur live in camps under unsanitary conditions, which leads to the spread of a number of diseases, Terzier explained. Sahra Hospital's free services were quite helpful to the people there. “Patients begin lining up at the hospital early in the morning and wait patiently for hours for their turn to come. The people regard Turkey with affection, and as doctors, we did our best to provide the best possible care to our patients. Our patients' thanks and prayers made us very happy. After serving the people there for two months, we left with beautiful memories,” he said.
