Politician killed in accident commemorated at site of crash

11 August 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu, the founder of Grand Unity Party (BBP), who died in a helicopter crash during election campaigning in March, was commemorated on Sunday on Kahramanmaraş's Keş Mountain, the site of the crash.

Yazıcıoğlu's wife and children as well as thousands of party members participated in “The First Yearning Assembly,” as BBP officials termed it, despite difficulties in transporting large crowds to the mountain. Representatives from various countries, including Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, East Turkistan and the Iraqi city of Kirkuk were in attendance.

BBP leader Yalçın Topçu said doubts surrounding the crash had not been removed and urged the government to continue to investigate the clash and uncover details. “Our nation is not satisfied with the results of the investigation on the crash,” Topçu said and promised that the party will remain faithful to Yazıcıoğlu's ideals.

Gülefer Yazıcıoğlu defined her husband as an example of goodness and benevolence and said he died a martyr on the mountain. “He loved you [party members] more than his family and always worked for his ideals,” she said, adding that her husband had said his ambition was to carry the name of God to every corner of the world. “You should carry on his memory by teaching future generations,” she added.

The BBP conferred plaques on villagers who first reached the crash site and found Yazıcıoğlu's body.

At the time of the crash, commentators claimed mobile phone signals could not reach the area, resulting in Yazıcıoğlu and the people around him being unable to communicate with anyone after the crash. Those present at the ceremony, however, report that they were able to make and receive calls.
