Lions run riot in Europa League, Fener also through

Galatasaray's Ivory Coast striker Abdul Kader Keita (C) celebrates with his teammates after scoring the second goal for his team against Netanya on Thursday. At right, Fenerbahçe players celebrate their only goal in the 1-1 draw with Hungary's Honved at Budapest.

The Galatasaray Lions, the UEFA Cup champions and UEFA Super Cup winners in 2000, mercilessly pulverized Israeli side Maccabi Netanya FC 6-0 in their UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, second leg match at İstanbul's Ali Sami Yen Stadium on Thursday night, thus sending warning signals to foes and friends across the European continent that they are eager to bring back the Galatasaray glory days.
The resounding victory means the Lions advance 10-1 after coming from one goal down to drub the Israelis 4-1 in the first leg in Tel Aviv last Thursday.

The Yellow Canaries also easily went through to the fourth round of the competition after drawing 1-1 after with Hungarian side Budapest Honvéd in the second leg to advance 6-2 on aggregate having won 5-1 in the home leg last Thursday. New signing André Clarindo dos Santos gave the Canaries the lead in the ninth minute, but Attila Fritz equalized for the Hungarians four minutes from time. It is worthy to note that Fener played with 10 men for one hour after Brazilian defender Fábio Alves da Silva Bilica, signed in early summer, was red-carded in the 33rd minute.

In İstanbul the writing was already on the wall for hapless Maccabi after two minutes when attacking midfielder Barış Ozbek put the Lions 1-0 up. Newly signed Ivory Coast striker Abdul Kader Keita doubled the score in the sixth and the Lions went to their dressing room with a 2-0 advantage.

The Lions literally ran riot after the interval. Barış was again on target in the 51st to make it 3-0 and then Congo forward Shabani Nonda hit a hat-trick -- scoring in the 56th, 60th and 90th to complete the rout.

But most of the praise should go to young Galatasaray winger Aydın Yılmaz, the man of the match, who was instrumental in almost all of the goals scored.
