Among the hottest topics in the press last month were the recent developments in the Ergenekon trial, a document allegedly prepared by a group inside the military plotting to undermine the AK Party, the conflict in China's Xinjiang district, Turkey's first encounter with 3G technology and oriental dancer turned singer Sibel Can's divorce from her husband.
According to the MTM report -- based on the screening of more than 1,700 media organs, including newspapers, TV stations, journals and Web sites -- the Ergenekon trial was the subject of 11,661 news stories in July. Stories about separatist terrorism appeared in 5,631 news items while television broadcasts dedicated to this subject comprised 127 hours. Overall, there was a 40 percent fall in the frequency of terrorism-related stories last month in comparison with the previous month.
Attacks in China's Xinjiang region against ethnically Turkish Uighurs followed Ergenekon in the frequency of coverage: 7,685 news reports covered China last month, while the number of news stories about the Uighurs was 5,560.
Stories about the sudden death of Michael Jackson in June continued to dominate the press agenda last month with newly revealed controversy and mystery surrounding the pop icon's death. In July, Jackson's death was the subject of 2,306 stories and 48 hours of airtime on Turkish television networks.
The EU, an ever important subject for Turkey, was the focus of 14,899 news stories last month. The growing global swine flu epidemic was the subject of 1,712 news items. Another topic that was talked about was the Münevver Karabulut murder. The brutal killing, which remains unsolved, was the subject of 1,482 news items.
The AK Party appeared in 17,556 news items, mostly due to a controversial report allegedly prepared by a military colonel to undermine the ruling party. The Republican People's Party (CHP) was the subject of 11,538 items with its criticism directed against the ruling party regarding the Ergenekon case and the Deniz Feneri charity fraud affair.
The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) was the subject of 4,504 news items, most of them focusing on the resignations of 58 MHP deputies from the Turkey-China Friendship Group in Parliament.
