During ceremonies commemorating the Night of Forgiveness (Berat Kandili in Turkish) yesterday, mevlids -- poems celebrating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad -- were recited in Kurdish, Turkish and Arabic in three separate mosques in the southeastern province of Mardin.
Berat Kandili, observed on the night between the 14th and 15th days of Sha'ban -- the eighth month of the Hijri calendar -- was commemorated with prayers on Wednesday night by Muslims throughout Turkey.

Berat Kandili was observed in a unique way in Mardin, a city that hosts many cultures. A mevlid was recited in Turkish at the Küba Mosque, while it was recited in Kurdish at the Fuat Yağcı Mosque and in Arabic at the Ulucami Mosque. The mevlid recited in Kurdish was broadcast by TRT 6, a Kurdish television station launched in January

Ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Mardin deputy Cüneyt Yüksel, who pioneered the program, said people have already benefited from the Kurdish initiative recently launched by the government. “I hope this program contributes to locals observing the night better,” he said.

Berat Kandili, called Laylat-ul-Bera'at in Arabic, is considered a night when Muslims are graced with divine mercy and blessings. The night is spent reciting the Quran and performing special prayers as well as visiting the graves of deceased relatives.
