Ankara condemns Israel over Jerusalem evictions

5 August 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Turkey has condemned Israel for forcibly evicting Palestinians from East Jerusalem on Tuesday, calling for an immediate end to the practice, which it said goes against international norms.

Despite increasingly growing concerns with the US administration and international pressure, Israel continues to develop its Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. On Sunday, Israeli police forcibly evicted nine people from two families from their houses in the Sheikh Jarrah district to give the homes to Jewish settlers. In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the action, saying it goes against Israel's international law commitments and harms efforts to create suitable conditions to start negotiations in an Israel-Palestine peace process.

It also said that Israel should refrain from actions that would change the status of East Jerusalem. Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of a future state that includes the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Israel captured the territory in the 1967 Six-Day War and subsequently annexed it in a move the international community has not recognized.

The United States, the United Nations and the European Union have all expressed concern over the forced evictions.
