Turkish ship attacked off Nigeria

4 August 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A Turkish commercial ship was attacked by pirates off the coast of Nigeria, news reports said yesterday. Two of the ship's 22 crewmen were injured, private NTV television said. No details were immediately available.
Several Turkish ships have been hijacked off the coast of Somalia by pirates. A Turkish ship, Horizon-1, was hijacked last month in the Gulf of Aden, and its 23 crew members are still being held hostage by pirates. Foreign navies, including two Turkish navy frigates, have been deployed off the coast of Somalia since the start of the year to try to prevent attacks, but they have found themselves overstretched given the vast expanses of water involved. Last week Turkish navy sailors captured seven pirates who were preparing to attack a ship in the Gulf of Aden.
