Report: 2 Turks wounded in attack off Nigeria

3 August 2009 / AP, ANKARA
Turkish media reports that pirates have opened fire and wounded two crew members of a Turkish ship in an attack off the coast of Nigeria.

Deniz Haber reported Monday that the pirates attacked the M/V Düden late Sunday. It says Kemal Dinç, an official of the Sotrans Shipping company that owns the ship, confirmed the attack. The company did not return repeated calls.

Turkey's semi-official Anatolia news agency also confirmed the attack, citing unnamed authorities.

Deniz Haber quotes Dinç as saying the crew members were hit in the arms and that the ship escaped the scene before the pirates could board it.

Deniz Haber says the ship was carrying rice from Lagos to Port Harcourt, the main oil-industry hub in southern Nigeria.
