İhsanoğlu Gold Medal goes to Spanish academic

3 August 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has selected Jose Bellver Martinez as the inaugural winner of its İhsanoğlu medal, a gold medal named for the organization's secretary-general, Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu.

Martinez, from Barcelona University, was presented the medal by Professor İhsanoğlu during an awards ceremony held on Saturday, the last day of the 23rd International Congress of History of Science and Technology, in Budapest.

Martinez was awarded the medal for his extraordinary contributions to studies on the Islamic civilization's history of science in his thesis on the history of astronomy.

Speaking to the Anatolia news agency after the awards ceremony, Martinez said he was pleased to have won the İhsanoğlu Gold Medal.

Professor İhsanoğlu, on the other hand, said he felt extremely proud that the award had been named after him.  The International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science (HOPOS) decided two years ago to organize an international competition to be held once every four years and name it after İhsanoglu.

This is the first prize presented since its introduction. A scholar himself, İhsanoğlu had become the first Turkish academic to receive the Koyre Medal, from the International Academy of the History of Science, in December of last year.

İhsanoğlu took the opportunity to condemn a series of bomb attacks perpetrated against five Shiite mosques in Baghdad Saturday and an ensuing roadside bomb attack near a Sunni mosque in the town of Hilla yesterday. He voiced his indignation at these inhuman acts specifically targeting places of worship and worshipers.

Secretary-General İhsanoğlu reaffirmed his solidarity with the government and people of Iraq in the face of these attacks while conveying condolences to the families of the victims and praying for the speedy recovery of the wounded.

The OIC secretary-general described the attacks as acts of provocation at a crucial period of transition targeting the Iraqi nation and its unity to harm the welfare and future of Iraq. He warned that the enemies of Iraq will continue their violent acts in the days ahead to stir sectarian strife and violence. Therefore, he appealed to Iraqi political and religious leaders to openly exhibit solidarity with their words and deeds against any attempt to stir sectarian divide, in order to not let the provocations harm the unity and brotherhood of the Iraqi people.

İhsanoğlu, referring to the 2006 Mecca Document, particularly urged all Muslim religious leaders in Iraq to draw attention to and highlight the Islamic principles which sanctify human life and consider it sacrosanct and inviolable and to condemn the perpetrators of brutal crimes.
