A total of 145,330 traffic accidents happened in Turkey in the first six months of 2009, during which time, according to the Turkish Security Department, 1,811 people were killed while 87,995 others were injured.
The number of individuals who have died in traffic accidents has increased by 7 percent and those injured by 11 percent in comparison to the same period of 2008. In the first six months of 2009, Turkish Traffic Police wrote traffic tickets amounting to TL 450,598,056 (approximately $306,529,289) to vehicle drivers.
