Gendarmerie pays visit to families of slain DTP members

31 July 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Three gendarmerie officers in the southeastern province of Şırnak, where two pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP) members were found dead on Sunday, paid visits to their families on Wednesday, the Yeni Şafak daily has reported.

This unexpected move by the gendarmerie came as Interior Minister Beşir Atalay was announcing the government's plans to bring a solution to Turkey's 25-year-long Kurdish issue on Wednesday, calling on everyone to contribute to the peace process. Brig. Gen. Arif Şetin Gülyazı, accompanied by colonels Haydar Kaya and Faruk Bal, offered condolences to the families of Necman Ölmez and Ferhat Ediş, who were found dead in the Beytüşşebap district on Sunday. According to the report, the officers requested that the families help the police in the investigation that has been launched into the incident.

The two men were found dead near the village of Günyüzü close to the car in which they had been traveling. The men had apparently been hit on the head with stones and shot in the chest. The investigation launched into the incident by the Beytüşşebap Public Prosecutor's Office is ongoing.
