Road accidents claimed the lives of at least 15 people across Turkey yesterday, with a collision between two cars and two trucks on the Mersin-Tarsus highway on Thursday leaving nine dead and one young girl injured.

According to reports, two cars crashed into an accident ahead of them involving two trucks near Damlama in Mersin's Tarsus district. The cars, driven by Hikmet Karael and Ömer Kaya, were traveling in the lanes behind two trucks that collided, driven by Kadir Ekinci and Ramazan Demirci, and were unable to avoid ramming into the trucks.

Eight people were killed at the scene of the accident, while another person died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

The sole survivor from the cars involved in the accident is 4-year-old Merve Karael. She is currently being treated for serious injuries at the Tarsus 70Yıl State Hospital.

Following the accident, the Mersin section of the TEM Highway was temporarily closed to traffic. All of those who died in the accident have been identified: the bodies at the Tarsus 70 Yıl State Hospital morgue are those of Hikmet Karael (44) and his passengers Sedef (11), Levent (17) and Zeynep Karael (35); and Ömer Kara (53) and his passengers Nuray Kara (53), Yeliz Duru (32) and Lebanese nationals Amna Joumana Marhi (62) and Bilal Sidani (37).

The Karael family was reportedly returning from festivities in Çorum when the accident happened, having traveled there for the wedding of Zeynep Karael's brother, Ramazan Yaman.

Another traffic accident occurred on the TEM Highway in Düzce when a truck driven by Sabri Seba (47) lost control and rear-ended a truck driven by İbrahim Kul (49). Sabri Seba and passengers Rahim Seba (44) and İbrahim Seba (40) were injured. İbrahim Seba later died despite receiving medical treatment at Hendek State Hospital. Sabri and Rahim Seba were transferred to the Toyota-Sa First Aid Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

While a 20-car pileup left a dozen injured in Silivri, accidents involving only one vehicle also resulted in deaths across the country on Thursday. A 20-car pileup on the Silivri section of the TEM Highway left 12 wounded yesterday in an accident authorities say was caused by speeding and careless driving. The injured were taken to Silivri State Hospital and the private Kolan and Hayat hospitals for treatment. There were no deaths from the accident.

In Kayseri, one person died and three were injured when a vehicle overturned and fell off the side of the road in the Talas district. İlhan Çoşkun (16) died from his injuries at the Erciyes University Medical School Hospital. Driver Şahin Ulu and passengers İdris Karasungur and Hacı Ömer Geldim are being treated at the same hospital. Four people were killed and five injured in other accidents in Yozgat, Çorum and Kastamonu.
