Press Roundup

31 July 2009 / ,
As the rest of Turkey tries to acclimate to a smoking ban that went into effect on July 19, a village in Kastamonu enjoys a smoke-free environment. No one has lit up in the village for the past six years. “Welcome to the village of Ortaöz, where no one smokes,” reads a placard at the entrance to the village.
Zaman: “Minister drew road map of Kurdish initiative, more democracy,” read the headline of a front-page story in the daily yesterday, which quoted remarks from Interior Minister Beşir Atalay's news conference on Wednesday about the government's road map for a solution to the Kurdish problem. A solution can be reached with the expansion of democratic rights, and everyone should see themselves as equal citizens, said Atalay. The minister said the most important aspect of the democratic initiative was to take lessons from the past and build a future together. We will not be stuck in the past, Atalay said, adding: “We will carry out the process as a state policy. We will take steps with all segments of the public. We will meet with writers, the media and opposition parties and ask for their contribution.”

Taraf: “DTP should be a part of the solution,” read the headline of a front-page article in the daily yesterday, which reported that members of the Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen's Association (TÜSİAD) who paid a visit to the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP) in Parliament on Wednesday asked the party to be part of the solution to the Kurdish problem. DTP leader Ahmet Türk, who met with TÜSİAD Chairwoman Arzuhan Doğan Yalçındağ, asked TÜSİAD to play a more active role in the solution process. Türk also vowed that his party would fulfill its responsibility for the settlement of peace and not let seeds of hatred and anger be sown, reported the daily.

Sabah: “Turkish model initiative,” read the headline of the daily's main story yesterday, which reported on the statements Interior Minister Atalay made regarding the Kurdish initiative on Wednesday. He said experiences of many countries were examined while seeking a solution to the Kurdish problem and that Turkey would apply a model unique to its own circumstances. Atalay said he hoped the model Turkey would develop for the solution to the Kurdish problem would be a model for the world, reported the daily.
