PKK members detained in Syria

30 July 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, ANKARA
Eleven members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) have been seized in Syria in recent operations carried out by Syrian security forces. Kurds living in Syria accuse the PKK of dealing in child abduction and extortion. Syrian security forces launched operations based on information acquired from local Kurds. They raided several houses belonging to the PKK in districts of Aleppo province.

Sait Sabri (35), Ahmet Abbas (28), Faruk Salih (28) and Semir İzzettin (23), responsible for local PKK operations in Syria, were taken into custody and jailed. In addition to several weapons, mines and plastic explosives, a considerable amount of money and confidential PKK documents were found in the houses.

In the meantime, the Supreme State Security Court began hearing the trial of 22 PKK members seized in Damascus, Aleppo, Afrin and ‘Ayn al-‘Arab. The PKK members will be tried over allegations of extortion, child abduction, separatism and provoking Kurds living in Syria to fuel ethnic conflict.

The Adana agreement signed in 1998 stipulates that Turkey and Syria will cooperate to fight against the PKK. Nearly 100 terrorists have been extradited to Turkey since the agreement was signed. Turkey also has similar agreements with Iran and Iraq.
