A total of 165 suspected members of the Hizb ut-Tahrir group were detained in simultaneous raids in 23 provinces on Friday. The police said the operation was launched in coordination with the National Intelligence Organization (MİT).
Weapons and hundreds of T-shirts emblazoned with slogans calling for the establishment of one large state ruled by Islamic law as well as maps and flags of such a state were also seized in the operation. Hizb ut-Tahrir is banned in Turkey.
With legal proceedings nearing their conclusion, courts in some cities have ordered that some of the detainees be placed under arrest.
In Diyarbakır, seven of 13 suspects detained were arrested on Monday on charges of membership in a terrorist organization. A statement from the police said a teacher and a doctor were among those arrested. The remaining six were released. Three of 16 detained in Friday's operations in Şanlıurfa were arrested yesterday by order of a court they were referred to after a police interrogation. Of the remaining detainees, 12 were released pending trial while one was released. The three people arrested stand accused of being regional organizers for the group.
In Van, four of the eight detained on Friday have been arrested on charges of membership in Hizb ut-Tahrir. The other four were released pending trial. Five of the 15 detained in Adana have also been arrested. The prosecutor demanded the arrest of nine people in this city. Four individuals were released pending trial.
In İstanbul, 11 of 18 detained were arrested by order of a court they were referred to after their interrogation at the prosecutor's office. One was released by the prosecution while six were released by the court. In Siirt, three of five suspected Hizb ut-Tahrir members were arrested, while in Kocaeli, nine of 19 detained on Friday were arrested. Meanwhile, the Kocaeli Police said a large number of intra-organizational documents, compact disks and a pellet gun were seized in an operation carried out there.
In Erzurum and Kars, five of seven detained were arrested while in Aksaray six of 11 detained were arrested.
