Retrofitting causes increase in traffic around Haliç Bridge

28 July 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN , İSTANBUL
Construction to reinforce the Haliç Bridge, which crosses the Golden Horn, has caused massive traffic problems on roads leading to the bridge.
İstanbulites who normally use the bridge or connecting roads were met with traffic jams on Monday morning as motorists learned that the bridge has been shut down for nearly one month for seismic retrofitting. The construction is being carried out by the 17th Regional Highways Directorate and is expected to be completed on Aug. 27.

Traffic in the area has increased since the retrofitting began on Saturday but was particularly bad on Monday as the work week began, despite advance warnings and signs posted by authorities. The convenience of a Metrobus became all the more obvious as it sped by traffic backed up near the Ayvansaray connection to the Haliç Bridge.
