27 July 2009 / ,
Venus Williams: inaugural winner - May 21, 2005 Venus Williams won her first title in a year, defeating Nicole Vaidisova, 6-3, 6-2 in wind and drizzle to win the inaugural İstanbul Cup and boost her confidence for the French Open, which started the next day.

It was the 32nd championship, and seventh on clay, for Williams, and her first since May 2004 in Warsaw. “It's great to win my first tournament of the year, especially on the eve of a Grand Slam,” Williams said. “I'm going to go into Roland Garros with lots of confidence, and after four good matches on clay.” Williams, seeded first, was playing in her first final since February. She won the first four games of the match and had little trouble against the 16-year-old Vaidisova, a Czech who was seeded second.

Shahar Peer wins in the second year - May 27, 2006

Israeli teenager Shahar Peer won the biggest WTA Tour title of her career as she beat Russian Anastasia Myskina in a nail-biting final to the İstanbul Cup. The third set tie-break victory marked a dramatic comeback for the 19-year-old, who lost the first set 6-1 to first-seeded Myskina, who played despite an injured right arm. But after forcing a third and deciding set by taking the second set 6-3, fourth-seeded Peer clinched her share of the $200,000 prize money by eventually winning 7-6 (7-3) in the decider.
