Erdenay calls camp ‘relaxing’; Tunceri predicts Turkish success at EuroBasket 2009

The camp in Antalya relaxed and revitalized the players before the challenging Eurobasket 2009, the Turkish national basketball team's manager, Harun Erdenay, has said.
After finishing the preparatory camp for the European Basketball Championship 2009, also known as Eurobasket 2009, in Antalya and returning to İstanbul on Tuesday, Turkey's national basketball team left for Italy yesterday. Speaking to the Anatolia news agency before Thursday's training session in İstanbul, Erdenay said they will increase the intensity of training in Italy, adding: “We will work more on conditioning in Italy. Besides, we will have two training matches with Canada while there.”

Stressing that they had aimed to relax at the camp in Antalya, Erdenay said: “We had light training in Antalya. The players had a chance to work and to swim. They were able to relax and have a rest.”

Noting that Sinan Güler is injured, the manager also said Ersan İlyasova will join the camp in Italy since he is about to sign a deal with NBA team the Milwaukee Bucks.

Speaking about the criticism regarding the absence of Bogdan Tanjevic, the coach of the team, at the Antalya camp, Erdenay said: “We would normally gather on July 24. We moved the meeting back by one week due to player demand. We did this to rest and work. The absence of Tanjevic did not cause any problems since we didn't work on tactics.”

Kerem: More likely to succeed with last year’s spirit

One of the star players of the national team, Kerem Tunçeri, said the team would be more likely to succeed if they could regain the spirit of last year. “I hope we will catch the same spirit to struggle as we did last year. It doesn't matter that some teams are lacking some of their star players. We also lack some injured players. Missing two or three players doesn't mean the team will lose. We are a very talented team as a whole. We are composed of young players, and we play well. We have very talented players positioned underneath [the basket] and inside the field.”

Highlighting that the Antalya camp was a camp to increase morale, Tunçeri said: “The real training will start in Bormio [in Italy]. Such training is hard after vacation, but we need to train.”

As to the intensity of basketball players' schedules, Tunçeri noted: “A busy schedule produces tired players. The European national team players in particular don't have a chance to rest. It would be good to find a remedy for this. The season ends, and after 15 to 20 days, training for the national teams starts. The matches with the national team end, and then preseason training starts with the club team. Players get worn out, both physically and mentally. As basketball players get older, their bodies can't handle [such a busy schedule]. A solution needs to be found.”
