Weapons found off Üsküdar coast

25 July 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A light anti-tank weapon and two bags of ammunition were found late Thursday night off İstanbul's Üsküdar district at Salacak. The police said a spearfishing enthusiast noticed the light anti-tank weapon as he dove in the area and informed the authorities.

The police cordoned off the coast while divers started searching for the weapon and ammunition underwater.

The weapon and ammunition were taken to the police department. No official statement was issued on Friday. The number of weapons and explosives unearthed as part of an ongoing investigation into the clandestine criminal organization Ergenekon has increased the frequency of arms cache discoveries, with weaponry found buried underground, hidden underwater or just abandoned at roadsides. The Ergenekon probe has resulted in the discovery of large caches of munitions, including light anti-tank weapons, hand grenades, rifles and bullets, in various Turkish cities. Experts believe members panicking due to the expanding investigation might be abandoning weaponry to avoid capture under the probe.
