Elazığ killers claim sound mental health

25 July 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
The men accused of shooting six people to death in the village of Karaali in Elazığ earlier this week have denied claims that they might be insane, asserting that they were fully aware of their actions as they rained bullets on villagers in an attack that also left seven injured.
The three suspects, a father and his two sons, who were detained on Wednesday, confessed to having carried out the shootings and told the gendarmerie during the initial investigation that they were “sorry.” The suspects testified that they believed their victims were their “enemies,” claiming that the victims were trying to take their land and property.

They said that when they started shooting, they did not aim to leave a single person alive, noting, however, that they did not want to shoot any women or workers on the land, but simply had no choice as they happened to be at the scene at the time of the shooting.

Meanwhile, prosecutors conducting the investigation discovered that another prosecutor had previously issued an order for a psychiatric examination of the three suspects, based on a complaint from two residents of Karaali on July 18. The three men were expected to visit a nearby psychiatric hospital upon the prosecutor's order on July 21, the day of the shooting.
