Baykal lambastes efforts to discredit TSK

24 July 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal complained yesterday about systematic efforts to discredit the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) and restrict its power.

Holding a news conference at CHP headquarters in Ankara yesterday, Baykal revealed a recently unearthed document that was allegedly created by a colonel to damage the government and discredit the TSK.

He stated that although Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said his government would investigate the controversial document, which was revealed last month, there was currently no active discussion about the document.

“This case was like a dream. Many things were said about it [the document]. It had a damaging effect on the institutions and their reliability,” Baykal said, stressing that those who had created the document should be found.

Baykal also complained that there was tension between the government and the judiciary in Turkey as he accused the government of trying to render the judiciary ineffective and control it.

“The Justice and Development Party's [AK Party] attempt to take the judiciary under its control is a very obvious move,” said Baykal, noting that the government was trying to replace the members of the supreme judiciary with jurists selected by AK Party politicians.

Discussing the ongoing investigation into the Ergenekon case -- a clandestine crime network that has alleged links to the state -- Baykal said the indictment exceeds 5,000 pages in length, which is unheard of in court cases in other countries and that the trial process does not comply with international criteria for a fair trial.
