DP, ANAVATAN set to merge

24 July 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Leaders of the Democrat Party (DP) and the Motherland Party (ANAVATAN) announced yesterday that they were determined to merge their parties by the end of 2009.

DP leader Hüsamettin Cindoruk and ANAVATAN leader Salih Uzun held a joint news conference at the ANAVATAN headquarters yesterday and informed the press about the ongoing plans for the merger.

ANAVATAN leader Uzun said Cindoruk would assume the leadership position after the merger of the two parties. The first general assembly following the merger will be held in October.

Uzun said the merger of the DP and ANAVATAN parties was necessary for the normalization of Turkey, a mutual goal of the parties.

“Turkey needs to normalize; it needs to take a breath. We are merging for Turkey's normalization,” said Uzun.

“We have full consensus for a merger,” said Cindoruk, who explained that the merger was not aimed against any political party.
