Heavy rains turn Black Sea towns into ‘Atlantis'

23 July 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
The Black Sea region has been assaulted with heavy rainfall that has flooded countless homes and workplaces in one of the worst natural disasters to ever strike the region. Heavy rains in Giresun on Tuesday morning lasted about five-and-a-half hours but flooded virtually the entire city, with the Great and Lesser Güre rivers breaking their banks, sweeping approximately 150 motor vehicles into the Black Sea.

Giresun State Hospital as well as schools and many homes were flooded. One person, Secaattin Gündoğdu, is missing, with search-and-rescue teams looking for him since Tuesday evening. According to the latest official figures, 462 homes, 179 workplaces, six government buildings and 103 vehicles were damaged in the floodwaters.

Giresun District Mayor Kerim Aksu called it the biggest catastrophe in the region's history, saying: “The financial damage that has been incurred equals at least TL 20 million. As a municipality, all of our vehicles and equipment are insufficient, and we are unable to intervene effectively.” He said that many vehicles as well as thousands of homes were under water. “We're unable to get a precise count because everything is under water. … It is impossible for the municipality to set this situation right on its own; we absolutely must get help from the government,” Aksu said.

Rize was also struck by heavy precipitation on Tuesday, with many homes and businesses flooded in the Ardeşen and Fındıklı districts. Rain began in Fındıklı on Tuesday night and caused the banks of the Arılı Creek to overflow, causing flooding throughout the Hürriyet, Merkez and Sahil neighborhoods. The bottom floors of a medical treatment center in Fındıklı were flooded, and patients had to be evacuated with municipal vehicles.

A large amount of agricultural land was damaged by the flooding, and Fındıklı District Mayor Adnan Özbalaban said the only upside to the situation was that no deaths were reported. The rains continued for five hours, he said, adding: “The rainwater mixed with the waters from the Arılı Creek flowed into the district center. Floodwaters caused damage to three of our neighborhoods. Teams from the municipality, gendarmerie and police helped residents near the banks of the creek evacuate.” In Rize's Ardeşen district, the Dolana and Fırtına creeks overflowed as a result of the heavy rains. Basement and ground floors of some homes and workplaces were flooded, and some roadways were closed until the rain stopped.
