Şenay Malbora said around 10,000 acres of forested land are destroyed by fires in Turkey each year. “More than 5 million acres are scorched in wildfires throughout the world. Ninety-four percent of those fires are caused by humans while the rest are caused by various factors, including lightning,” she noted.Malbora also warned farmers against burning stubble left over after harvesting cereal crops. Field burning was prohibited several years ago in accordance with a decision of the Local Environment Board, as they can result in serious wildfires.
“Turkey's Aegean and Mediterranean regions are under a high risk of wildfires,” the TEMA official said, adding that people must stop throwing out cigarette butts and matches in forested areas. Wildfires, which are frequent in Turkey's western and southern regions, scorch hundreds of acres of fertile land.
