German tourist killed for TL 1

22 July 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
German tourist Gregor Kerkeling was killed on Monday morning by a man on İstanbul's İstiklal Street. The 42 year-old German tourist was walking on Istiklal Street with his girlfriend when a young man, İbrahim A., 24, approached him and asked for TL 1. When Kerkeling refused, İbrahim A. stabbed the man multiple times in the heart.
After waiting for an ambulance, Kerkeling was taken to the intensive care unit at Taksim İlkyardım Teaching and Research Hospital, but he died despite doctors' efforts. The body of the German tourist was taken to the Council of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

The alleged murderer was detained by police officers and has been taken in for questioning.

Eyewitnesses say they heard someone screaming for help in the early morning. “The man fell down, and then another man started to stab him with a bread knife. The injured man waited for an ambulance for half an hour. Even though Taksim İlkyardım Hospital is two minutes away [from the scene], the ambulance did not arrive for half an hour. The man might have died due to loss of blood,” an eyewitness noted.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
