Turkish prime minister plans to visit Iraq

21 July 2009 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, ANKARA
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is planning to visit Iraq in October, said Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu on Tuesday.

Davutoğlu spoke to reporters after a preparatory meeting for Turkey-Iraq High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council in Ankara.

He said that the Council's meeting would take place in Baghdad during Erdoğan's visit.

Giving information about the structure of the Council, Davutoğlu said that the Council was principally co-chaired by the prime ministers of Turkey and Iraq, and took up the relations between the two countries on the highest level.

The Council, under the agreement reached on July 10, 2008, decided to convene once a year, added Davutoğlu.

Noting that Prime Minister Erdoğan met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki during Nabucco Summit last week, Davutoğlu said that the two premiers set a schedule during their meeting.

Davutoğlu said that he would also visit Iraq in August and discuss the action plan and projects with Iraqi officials.

He said that thanks to the Council, Turkey and Iraq would establish political relations on the highest level, and increase the economic relations to a level of economic integration.

Davutoğlu said that the Council was a project which envisioned cooperation on energy, transportation, commerce, public works, health and environment areas between Turkey and Iraq.
