We are pleased with Turkey's attitude on recent events in Xinjiang, Kadeer

21 July 2009 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, WASHINGTON
Chairperson of the World Uighur Congress, Rebiya Kadeer, said Monday they were pleased with Turkey's attitude on the recent events that took place in Xinjiang region of China.

We are grateful to Turkey for its approach to the incidents in Xinjiang, Kadeer said.

Speaking in a press conference held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Kadeer argued that China used its economic power to prevent nations of the world from reacting to the recent incidents in Xinjiang.

Within this framework, many countries remained silent in the wake of incidents in Xinjiang region, Kadeer said.

Kadeer wanted the United States to speak louder to China on the Xinjiang region.

We are pleased to see that Turkey is on the side of justice and truth. We are grateful to Turkey for the support extended, Kadeer said.

Asked whether she applied for a Turkish visa, Kadeer said that the situation is very serious and that she continues to work in Washington, D.C.

I will hopefully apply for a visa in the near future, Kadeer said.

Asked about the number of Uighurs killed in recent incidents in Xinjiang region, Kadeer said "perhaps, up to 1,000 Uighurs might have been killed. Since there is no healthy communication with the region, we do not know the exact numbers".

Kadeer said that the Chinese press distorted the recent events.

The world media should not pay attention to the Chinese press. We call on the international community to initiate an independent investigation on the recent incidents in Xinjiang, Kadeer also said.
