20 July 2009 / AKŞAM ASLI AYDINTAŞBAŞ,
Timing, timing. Since President Abdullah Gül said that Turkey has seized a historic opportunity for the settlement of its long-standing Kurdish problem several months ago, expectations about the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party's (PKK) laying down weapons and an eventual solution to the Kurdish problem have reached a peak.
Talking about the situation, Gül pointed out the existence of an initiative which the state launched silently a while ago. Turkey's real issue is not granting cultural or ethnic rights to the Kurds, because this has been realized to a certain extent with Turkey's EU process. The real issue is the identity issue and the PKK laying down its arms. This should be achieved through not only taking rapid steps but in dealing with it sensitively and with flawless timing, just like the launch of a space shuttle.
