Let's close down schools

20 July 2009 / YENİ ŞAFAK ABDULLAH MURADOĞLU,
The results of the Level Determination Examination (SBS) and Student Selection Examination (ÖSS) have shown that Turkey is about to lose its bid in education.
This fundamentally points to a systemic shortcoming. The students who graduate from private high schools are more successful than the students who graduate from state high schools. The students also get confused going between schools and private courses. Private courses give priority and more importance to successful students, and this has a demoralizing effect on the others. Under these circumstances, why should a family send their children to private courses when it puts a crimp in their budget? Unfortunately, teachers are not as interested in their students as they used to be. We always see teachers as the practitioners of a sacred profession, but this sacredness loses its value day by day just like other thing held sacred.
