İstanbul's Fatih University has plans to offer talent-based art scholarships, a first for the Turkish university system, which bases admissions almost solely on Student Selection Examination (ÖSS) results.
The results of this year's ÖSS have already been announced, with test-takers now filling out forms with their department and university preferences and hoping for the best. While of course reputation, location, course offerings and personal goals factor into the selection process, one of the most important criteria for students applying to university is the availability of scholarships. But the vast majority of scholarships hinge upon ÖSS performance to a large extent, and scholarships based on athletic or artistic ability are not yet widespread in Turkey.

Fatih University has taken a step in widening the availability of scholarships based on more than test scores, offering arts scholarships to students based on talent and regardless of their department of study. The scholarships are available not just for new students, but also those currently enrolled at the university. The students still must score high enough to gain admission to the university. The scholarships are to be granted without taking into account student ÖSS scores.

If a student has a special talent for music or theater, this could be their ticket to a 50 percent discount on tuition. Applications are available at the university Web site, www.fatih.edu.tr.
