One side of the Galata Bridge, which spans the Golden Horn estuary, will be closed to traffic and pedestrians until Monday evening, İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality has announced.
According to a written statement released on Thursday by the municipality, the Eminönü to Karaköy direction of the Galata Bridge will remain closed to traffic from Friday evening until 5 p.m. on Monday due to maintenance work being conducted on the bridge. Trams running towards Karaköy will also be cancelled during the three days. The other side of the bridge from Karaköy to Eminönü will be open to traffic and trams will keep running in this direction. “Vehicles traveling to Karaköy from Eminönü can use the Atatürk Bridge,” the statement read.

One of the symbols of İstanbul, the Galata Bridge has several restaurants and coffee houses on its lower level where people enjoy meals while watching fishermen and ferries.

Maintenance work was also recently carried out on the Fatih Sultan Mehmet (FSM) Bridge in İstanbul to replace its expansion joints. Work started on June 20 and was to last approximately 40 days but was completed ahead of schedule. The bridge was completely reopened to traffic on Tuesday, to the great relief of thousands of drivers who had to contend with particularly heavy traffic crossing the bridge due to lane closures during the maintenance work.
